January Meeting – IT’S A CHILI DAY TO FLY!

Just Chillin'

Join us for our first event of 2025, on Saturday, January 11th at 11am for our Chili and Cornbread Cook-Off competition! 
Bring a pot of your best chili or your favorite cornbread, and join the competition! Or bring your appetite and be one of the tasters/judges. We’ll be ready to serve the food by 11:30, with judging occurring throughout the food service.

Following the food we’ll hold a very brief and informal chapter business session, updating members on the new board plans and activities for the new year. We’ll have an ‘open floor’ session for members to share their views and desires for the chapter, before wrapping up no later than 1pm.

NOTE: this meeting replaces the regular Monday meeting.

We hope you’ll join us for a fun and relaxed event, good foods, information sharing and camaraderie.

Sunset on the Deck

A beautiful sunset brought the Chapter summer season to a close, with a strong turnout of members enjoying food, drink and the company of aviators, family and friends alike. It was good to meet several of our newer Chapter members too – welcome!

Thanks to those who contributed food – and we had lots! Thanks also to those who helped with the set-up and breakdown.

We had no Business discussed last evening, but the Board had prepared and distributed copies of the latest Business Report (also available on the web site) and a memo seeking additional volunteered help for our events and filling the Communication role. Our November Board Elections will be announced shortly.

The Chapter Fall programs include a VMC/IMC Members Meeting this Saturday at 9am. our next Chapter meeting Monday, October 7th, 7pm – with Tom Kenney, his RV Project reprise. We also have several Fly-Outs including this Saturday (7th) and – of course – our final 2024 Pancake Breakfast and Young Eagle flights on Saturday September 28th.

These can only happen with the support of the membership and we look forward to seeing you through the Fall!

Rob Newman – Flying Angel Flights
Angel Flight East is one of over 80 Public Benefit Flying Organisations in the US whose Mission is to provide free air transportation to qualified patients and their families by arranging flights to distant medical facilities, delivering supplies to disaster areas, and reuniting families during desperate times. We provide angelflighteast.org

After talking with several Angel Flight Pilots Rob enthusiastically joined the group. These missions provide a huge variety of flight experiences. The diversity of weather, airfields, flying ‘in the system’, instrument approaches and coordination with other pilots from Ohio, to the Carolinas and beyond makes each mission a challenge to plan and complete. AND a lot of fun. It’s been a great way to take a skill developed at great pain and government expense, and turn it into a fantastic opportunity for Service to Others. Rob will describe his experiences with such flights.

Chasing the Eclipse – Full Disc Aviation

Monday’s Membership Meeting opened with food, as we enjoyed a cook-out at the Chapter hangar. Our Membership Meeting that followed covered two topics – Member Rob Dant and VP Octavian presented on their separate adventures to get the optimum viewing of the recent eclipse – both successful! Maps and images showed their separate planning, changes that were required due to weather and full airport ramps and their eventual success in capturing the full eclipse.

Change of Program – Membership Meeting

We now have 14 new members that have joined the Chapter in 2024, and our Monthly Members Meetings are a great opportunity for those new members to find out just what EAA240 is all about. We’ll look forward to welcoming you on Monday for our first cook-out of the year, followed by a special presentation, described below.

Many new members and several existing members ordered name badges – they have arrived and will be available Monday evening, along with our new Chapter shirts and caps.

Richard Souza & James Woodard, Full Disc Aviation – Aviation Photography
Full Disc Aviation are a group of aviation enthusiasts including pilots, mechanics, servicemen, photographers and writers, coming together to share in the magnificent experience of aviation. Richard & James will describe FDA’s goals and ambitions, more recent happenings in the area of aviation photography, their current equipment, projects and aviation photography and post processing tips (including mirrorless camera use plus the comeback of film).

Space suits from Delaware!

Astronaut Space Suits, currently in use on the International Space Station were designed and manufactured in Delaware!

The Next Generation Space Suits are currently being designed for future space missions that will return us to the Moon, and on to Mars as part of the upcoming Artemis Missions.

The Space Suit Designs that include fourteen layers of different materials, each providing unique levels of protection to the Astronauts from the harsh vacuum of space, were explained and demonstrated by our Guest Speaker Andrew Taylor of ILC Dover, who kept the membership engaged throughout. Using photographs and video, Andrew detailed the history of the ILC company and its 60 + year role in the space program and the success the company has had in meeting the challenges of putting a man in space, and supplying NASA with solutions and products in support of all space missions to date.

This is going to be HOT!

Chili & Cornbread Fest 2024
Membership Event – Saturday January 13th 11:30am

Commencing the Chapter New Year in style, the Events Team 2024 brings you our popular 7th Annual Chili Cook-Off and Cornbread Competition.

Last year saw seven Chili Pots compete for prizes – this year we’re hoping for even more! Bring your cooked pot of Chili and your cornbread for sharing with the membership, who will vote on the best-of-the-day. Winners are awarded certificates and prizes, and the membership enjoys a fine lunch, sampling each!

This replaces our regular Monday evening Membership Meeting for January. Family & guests most welcome.

Join us, dust off your chili recipes and get cooking.
