October Membership Meeting – Flying Without an Engine

Monday, October 5th, 7pm

Join us Monday, October 5th for our first proper meeting after the summer break. We’ll gather at the hangar around 6pm for socializing and hangar flying, before kicking off the actual meeting at 7pm. We’ll be throwing hot dogs on the grill, and we still have chips to go with them. Stop by and grab some chow!

Following a brief chapter update, where we’ll discuss what’s been happening since the last time we got together, we’ll hand over the controls to the main feature of the evening.

This month’s EAA240 guest speaker is Juris Milestone, Secretary of the Board of Brandywine Soaring Association. As a member and glider pilot, Juris will give a presentation about the BSA, covering topics like gliding operations, thermaling, soaring cross-country, ridge soaring, etc. As a tow pilot, Juris will also discuss BSA’s towing operations and invites us to bring our insights, questions, and experiences. Finally, he will finish with more information about BSA membership, introductory flights, ab initio, and add-on training.

Hope to see you all Monday evening! As always, family, friends and guests are welcome!

We had great plans, but Mother Nature had other ideas. Due to the unfavorable Sunday forecast, we’re canceling the fly-out to Penn’s Cave Airport.

EAA240 VMC/IMC Club Meeting – Thursday, September 17th, 6:00pm

Sharing ideas, concepts and experiences in better flying.

Join us Thursday, September 17th for another VMC & IMC Club session, starting at 6:00pm. We’ll discus a few scenarios related to both VMC and IMC flying. All Chapter members – pilots and non-pilots – are invited to attend this session led by Robert Huxster. We’ll go through the scenarios and share flight experiences, with the goal being for all of us to learn something new.

The EAA VMC/ IMC Club provides a “hangar flying” experience organized around both fair weather and instrument flight, in order to promote safety, education, and proficiency.
Every meeting consists of a scenario presentation and group discussion about unusual or interesting charts, changed rules and procedures, and member experiences.  We also have occasional guest speakers.

The scenarios we will discuss at this meeting include: (IMC) ‘Hard to find at night’, trying landing at Clearwater at night with no rotating beacon, and (VMC) ‘Fun with flaps”, asymmetrical flap deployment.  Both will raise questions about risk management and aeronautic decision making. Additional scenarios may be presented.

Bring your EFB, your experience, and your questions, and be ready to participate.
All are welcome.  You do not need to be an EAA member or instrument rated pilot to attend.

We will also be discussing how you can earn WINGS Credit. This event is also offered as an FAA Safety Team Seminar. To view further details and registration information for this seminar, click here.

What a Beautiful Day to Start the Fall Season!

After many weeks of sweltering heat and high humidity, we got a perfect evening to hang out. Food was on the grill, sides and desserts were plenty, stories were shared and everyone had a great time!

Well after dark we finally decided to call it a day, probably helped by the fact that the food and the desserts (especially the ice cream) were running low. Thank you all for joining us on this beautiful day!

We will resume our regular meeting schedule starting in October, with our next chapter meeting scheduled for Monday, October 5th, starting at 6:30pm. Before that, we’ll have another VMC/IMC club meeting on Thursday, September 17th, followed by a Pancake Breakfast/Young Eagles event on Saturday, September 26th (we’ll need some volunteers to help us with this), and finally, the Board of Directors meeting on Tuesday, September 29th.
Mark your calendars and join us for these events!

Chapter Deck Party

Tuesday, September 8th, 6:30pm

Our newer members will be particularly welcome. The deck party replaces our normal monthly meeting for September.

As it is Labor Day weekend we’ll gather:
TUESDAY (NOT MONDAY!), September 8th at 6:30 pm

The chapter will provide chicken and hot dogs for the event. Please bring a dish (side dishes, salads, desserts, etc) or make an appropriate donation in lieu of a dish. BYOB.

We’ll also be selling excess inventory from the airshow, while supplies last.

Fly-Out Report – Eagle’s Mere, PA

What a gorgeous flying day we had! After a failed start the previous week, the weather gods were on our side with beautiful blue skies and light winds, making for a very enjoyable trip to Merritt Field, PA (4PN7).
Six aircraft (including a guest appearance) arrived at Merritt Field, with a total of fourteen pilots and passengers. Our hosts quickly marshalled us to parking and gave us a very warm welcome (no red carpet, but the grass runway and taxiway did their best to substitute), after which we made our way to the various museum hangars located on the field.

Following a quick snack at the ticket booth/snack bar, we started with the car museum, where some of our members experienced a proper trip down memory lane, recalling childhood memories involving cars they saw in the museum, and discussing various (mis)adventures experienced in them.

Next in line was the motorcycle museum – and while we found a Honda VFR Four on display, nobody could find its IFR equivalent. Sounds like it might be a niche worth filling.

The airplane hangars were next – full of historical aircraft and in a pristine state! Especially for our first-time visitors, they left quite the impression.

It was getting late in the afternoon by this point (we spent quite a bit of time there) and after thanking our hosts for the warm welcome and the great job they’re doing, we all headed back home, with the plan to come back there in the near future.

A big THANK YOU to the pilots that joined us for this fly-out! We couldn’t make this happen without your help. Our next Fly-Out is scheduled for Sunday, September 20th, with the chapter going underground as we fly to Penn’s Cave airport (N74).
