A popular destination for the chapter, the airport restaurant there had been closed for a while and has been recently reopened, with Carol’s Kitchen, a popular local restaurant moving in. Time to check it out!
We’ll meet at the Chapter hangar at 8:30am for briefing and seat assignments, with a scheduled departure time of 9:00am. CGE is 78nm S of N57, which will take about 50 minutes of flight time. The restaurant is open for breakfast only on Sundays, 8am to 1pm.
Pilots and passengers that have registered for Saturday, please re-register for the Sunday fly-out.

This coming Spring we hope to strike a blow for the cause of space-reclamation in our fair Chapter Hangar. Everyone should recognize that shared spaces have, if left to their own devices, the peculiar habit of accumulating all manner of STUFF. Some of this is owned by individual members for their projects, and some is dumped, donated, forgotten or leftover from past events or projects.
Here’s the proposal:
If you have an active project in the hangar and are paying the tenant fee you gain the right to store and work on your project in the hangar. This includes some material and tool storage within reason. Clearly some limits are necessary to enable other tenants and chapter members to use the space safely and efficiently. We do not have a formal policy on space usage and hope simple courtesy is sufficient to avoid “project creep”. That said, the machine shop area should not be used for storage of ANYTHING as it interferes with the safe operation of dangerous rotating machinery. We will be providing a closed cabinet for accessories, bits and cutters for the various machine tools. Everything else needs to be removed.
If you have tools, material and equipment that you care about stored in the hangar PLEASE TAKE IT HOME. Please do not leave stuff in the hangar overnight. It is not to be considered an extension of your basement or garage for storage purposes. Note that members who are storing project stuff in the hangar are paying a fee to compensate The Chapter for that using that space.
If you have made a long-term loan of tools or equipment to the chapter and want it to continue to be available to the membership, please make sure the items are clearly marked with your name and phone number. I’m thinking of things like welders, special tools like crimpers, flangers, aircraft scales, gauges and the like. We need to know who owns the stuff BECAUSE…
We are going to get rid of EVERYTHING stored in the hangar that has no defined purpose or value to the membership. Anything both in the hangar area and in the conference room space that has been sitting unused or unclaimed by April 1st 2025 will be considered abandoned property and subjected to confiscation, and sale or disposal. This includes:
Parts for projects long abandoned, hardware left for dust to land-on. Broken tools & rusty caps, bits of wire and cut-off scraps. Rags and cans of dried out paint, plastic bits from Harbor Freight. Boxes of assorted nails. Oily rags and old paint pails. Stuff you’re saving “just-in-case”, stuff forgotten, left in-haste. Tools in duplicate and triples. Brushes that won’t work for stipple. If you love it, take it home. Leave it not, for it may roam! The good stuff to be sold at auction. The junk to SECCRA for compaction.

For our November Membership Meeting in addition to voting for Board Members for the 2025/27 period we’re holding our Annual FlyMart, where you can bring along your aviation no-longer-needed-but-someone-else-might-find-a-use-for items and sell them, or donate them to another member. There may be items that will interest you too!
We’ll have the tables available in the main hangar space for items to be displayed, and where the bartering can happen! No fee’s but donations to Chapter funds are welcomed.
We’ll have coffee and donuts to oil the process for all.
No limits on the items but they must be aviation related, and unsold/donated items must be removed at the end of the meeting. No, we don’t want them either!
Search your toolboxes, hangar drawers, lockers and cabinets and bring your once-valued treasures along for reuse.

As part of our Annual General Chapter Meeting agenda and as required by the Chapter By-Laws, three of our five Executive Board Positions are to be voted on by those present at the meeting, Monday November 4th, at 6pm. This email serves as notice of the planned membership vote.
Voting will be held as part of the Annual General Membership Meeting and overseen by Brian Wheeler (Chapter Officer and Nominating Chair), who will tally votes and announce results at the meeting. This complies with Chapter By-laws, which can be viewed at the ‘Members Only’ area of the Chapter web site. Proxy votes are not permitted, you must be at the meeting to vote and your attendance at the November 4th meeting is therefore important.
Members in good-standing with the Chapter (ie fully paid for the current year) may now nominate candidates from the current membership for each of the three open positions of Membership Director, Secretary and Chapter President.
Nominees must have agreed to stand. The nominations close date is 5pm Friday, October 25th.
For information, Mike Parry will not be standing as President or any Board role for this new period but will continue as a Chapter member and will support the Board in the transition and as-needed going forward. Nominations for the Chapter President position are welcomed.
Your current Chapter Executive Board endorses and recommends the Chapter membership supports and vote for the following volunteers: the Board recommends Bud Swenson continue in his current role of Chapter Secretary. Further, the Board recommends Paul Dolan continue in his current role of Membership Director.
The current Board offers the following comments in support of each nominee:
Chapter Secretary: Bud Swenson. Bud has served as a Chapter Officer for many years, most recently as Chapter Secretary. In this role, in support of the Executive Board, he arranged, managed and recorded Executive Board Meetings. He also was primarily responsible for the external communications of the Chapter, particularly with EAA National. In addition, Bud has enthusiastically led the Young Eagles program, overseeing the flight arrangements, overall safety aspects, pilots, ground crew and the required documentation. Bud is a regular contributor to Chapter membership events and fly-outs. Bud has the current Board endorsement to continue in the role.
Chapter Membership Director: Paul Dolan. Paul has fulfilled the role of Membership Director for several years, ensuring new members are welcomed and added into our processes correctly. In addition Paul manages those processes and the main database that is the heart of the Chapter membership, allowing strong communication with members on Chapter events, as well as facilitating the collection of Chapter dues. Operating remotely (from near Frederick) Paul continues to provide excellent coverage of the role and contributes to all Board discussions snd decisioning. Paul has the current Board endorsement to continue in the role.

The early morning haze burned off, leaving us with clear blue skies for a nice trip. Unfortunately, due to a shortage of planes and pilots, a few passengers had to be left behind. Even so, four aircraft departed with a total of 13 chapter members for a smooth ride through the Hudson River Exclusion to Groton, CT. It was especially nice to give a ride to new members that have never experienced a fly-out before, with the tour of the NYC skyline being an amazing bonus. One of our youngest members got to fly a full circle around the Statue of Liberty – we’re sure that story will be told multiple times!!
We received a very warm welcome at GON, with the people at the local FBO providing us with a van and helping us to rent an additional vehicle. From there we went to the Submarine Force Museum, looking at the museum exhibits and touring USS Nautilus. After seeing some of the cramped interiors of a submarine, we don’t think our members will complain about lack of shoulder room in the typical GA aircraft.
Following the museum visit, we headed to the Fisherman Restaurant, where we sat down for a chat and great seafood. Bellies full, we headed back to the airport and then back to New Garden, concluding an amazing fly-out.
Many thanks to the pilots that joined us – it was an amazing day to be out there, and it was great to see the smiles on the faces of our passengers.
We’re going underwater! Or, at least, to the Submarine Capital of the World.
Join us Saturday, October 5th, for a flight to to Groton, CT (KGON). The nautical town is home to Naval Submarine Base New London (with its 22 submarines) and the USS Nautilus, the world’s first nuclear-powered submarine. The Nautilus is the main exhibit of the Submarine Force Museum (https://ussnautilus.org), which we’ll visit before heading to the Fisherman Restaurant (https://thefishermanrestaurant.com) for lunch.
We’ll meet at the Chapter hangar at 8:00am for briefing and seat assignments, with a scheduled departure time of 8:30am. GON is 192nm ENE of N57, which will take about 2 hours of flight time. Leaf changing season should be in full swing, offering great views on the way there and back. This trip offers the option of flying VFR up the Hudson River Exclusion between 1000 and 1300 ft. There are fantastic views of NYC and it is fun and exciting as well. After our arrival, we’ll drive to the museum (the FBO has a 10-person van) and then we’ll have lunch before heading back to New Garden.

This Saturday we have our final 2024 Pancake Breakfast and Young Eagle Flights, followed by a FAASTeam presentation (open to the public) in the Chapter Meeting Room – a full day of aviation! Please bring along family, friends and neighbors as we celebrate the season together with a fine breakfast and even better company! New 2024 Chapter members especially welcomed.
We also have Chapter Board Elections happening in November, where you can consider joining the Chapter Officers and contribute to Chapter operations. More information will be forthcoming.
