Fly- Out Report – South Jersey Regional

South Jersey Regional Airport & Museum – Chapter Visit – Sunday, April 28th 2024

What a beautiful day to go flying, after all!

Despite the low ceilings delaying our departure, four aircraft and seven chapter members arrived at South Jersey Regional Airport around noon. The staff was waiting for us and we were quickly seated, ready to enjoy our breakfast (err, lunch). With plenty of options to choose from, there were no duplicate orders. One of the menu options that stood out was the Jetlag Burger (pictured). It was delicious.
After our lunch we headed out to the Air Victory Museum. The staff there was very welcoming, and we got to take a look at their exhibits, some of which were quite unique. A new addition was the Aereon 26 lifting body prototype (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/AEREON_26), nicknamed “the pumpkin seed”. Its history is definitely worth reading.

Overall, a great visit, with nice and warm weather. See you at the next one!

May Monthly Meeting

EAA Chapter 240 announces
Membership Monthly Meeting – Monday, May 6th 2024

Weather permitting, we’ll enjoy a Cook-Out starting at 5:30. Join us for a chicken dinner! Bring a side dish or dessert or make a HUGE contribution to Chapter funds – they all work.

Our Monthly Meeting commences promptly at 7pm in the Chapter Meeting Room.

Rob Newman – All About Angel Flights:
Angel Flight East is one of over 80 Public Benefit Flying Organizations in the US whose mission is to provide free air transportation to qualified patients and their families by arranging flights to distant medical facilities, delivering supplies to disaster areas, and reuniting families during desperate times. Member Rob Newman will explain and describe how all this is accomplished.

Visitors & guests welcomed. We’ll be complete around 9pm

Chapter Fly-Out – South Jersey Regional

Chapter Fly-Out – Invitation

Join us Sunday, April 28th, for a flight to South Jersey Regional Airport (KVAY) in Mount Holly, NJ. It will be a good chance to practice your Class B airspace skills in this short, 30 to 40-minute flight. Or, if things are busy or you don’t want to deal with them, you can always take the scenic route around Philly’s Class B.

Once we arrive, we’ll have breakfast at the Runway Cafe, before heading over to the New Jersey Air Victory Museum. With a great collection of aircraft (including an F-14A Tomcat!), the museum is always worth visiting.

We’ll meet at the chapter hangar at 08:30 for briefing and seat assignment, with a planned departure time of 09:00. As always, the flight is weather and TFR-dependent, and we’ll try to pick an alternate destination if we can’t make it to our primary.

Please register. Pilots and planes are always needed! Let us know how many seats you have available when registering. Passengers, provide good contact information and accurate weight when registering.

Volunteer Work Parties

Hangar Maintenance – Volunteer Help Needed

This Saturday – April 27th

0830 to noon – fueled by coffee & donuts

We’re hoping to have volunteer help at our two Work Party sessions on the day & times above.

The hangar, kitchen and meeting room facility are a major asset of this unique Chapter and we need to maintain and improve them as we become more dependent on their use. This year we are investing in air-conditioning units for both the kitchen and to help in the Meeting Room space. These have been acquired and are now ready for installation….with your help.

We’re also improving the lighting in the kitchen and bathroom areas, with new LED fixtures. After completing this work, and now that we have resealed all the upstairs windows to stop rain leaks, we can then replace the damaged ceiling tiles in the kitchen and bathroom areas.

We have to repaint the rusting main hangar door frame, and repair the external staircase too.

Breakfast – YES! Kids Flights – no, sorry!

Disappointingly, a Presidential TFR (Temporary Flight Restriction) has been established by the USSS and, as a result we are unable to fly our Young Eagles, nor welcome any fly-ins to our scheduled Pancake Breakfast this Saturday, April 20th.

Our Pancake Breakfast will take place, commencing at 8am and we’ll welcome Chapter members and their family and friends, we’ll also enjoy the company of our very loyal local patrons who support us and join in the fun every year, enjoying a fine, freshly prepared traditional airport breakfast.

To our Young Eagles – we hope to be able to offer you an airplane ride in the not too distant future. Please check our web site www.eaa240.org for updates and announcements for future flights. Meanwhile, come and visit with us on Saturday morning, enjoy a great breakfast and tour our Chapter hangar and workshop, see airplanes being constructed by our members and chat with pilots and aviators!

Discussion – Declaring an Emergency?


Membership Discussion – IMC/VMC – Saturday, April 6th

Saturday’s IMC/VMC group discussion attracted 17 members who collectively reviewed EAA National-provided flight scenarios related to ‘what would you do in these circumstances?’, many of which – we concluded – warranted a declaration to ATC of an emergency in order to get help and guidance. This, in-turn, resulted in a good deal of discussion on that topic as we heard of actual occurrences of pilots, CFI’s and commercial pilots considering declaring emergencies (or not) amongst our morning group.

These informal discussions and experience exchanges continue to be a great help in sharing actual flight experiences and to generate thought-provoking discussion to aid us all in better decision making and safe aviating. We’ll continue to hold more sessions, particularly when we can’t fly due to TFR restrictions at weekends. Watch your email and the web site for announcements. All welcome!
