Annual Chapter Deck Party! – the day after Labor Day
TUESDAY, September 5th @ 6:00 pm, Chapter Hangar Deck
You and your family are invited to the EAA240 Annual Deck Party.
Come enjoy a late-summer evening of camaraderie and fun. No presentations, no speeches, no Chapter business – just good foods amongst good people.
The deck party replaces our normal monthly meeting for September.
As it is Labor Day weekend we’ll gather:
TUESDAY (NOT MONDAY!), September 5th at 6:00 pm
The Chapter will serve chicken (main dish), side dishes, sodas, water, coffee, tea
Please bring: a dish (side dishes, salads, deserts, etc) or make an appropriate donation in lieu of a dish, your beer or wine, please bring a seat/chair/stool/crate/rock
We’ll see you 6pm Tuesday, September 5th, for one of our most popular and best attended events of the season!
Chapter Fly-Out – Cancelled
Sadly, lack of sufficient member participation has resulted in the cancellation of Saturdays planned Fly-Out to OXB, Ocean City MD.

Fly Out to Ocean City Maryland on Saturday, August 26
Come join us for a coastal flight south to KOXB and enjoy a delicious lunch along the harbor!
Lunch reservations are set at “The Shark on the Harbor” restaurant. There you can chose some great food fresh from local farms and the local fishing harbor. The menu changes with fresh availability. From Beastro burgers to fresh jumbo lump crab cakes there is sure to be a fare for any palate!
Flight Time is approximately 1 hour. There is a $10.00 landing fee for each aircraft and we will Uber to the restaurant
Briefing and seat assignments at the EAA240 hanger at 10:45am, wheels up at 11:30
This flight is weather and TFR dependent
We need pilots and planes! Register at events@eaa240.org, let us know if you are looking for a ride. Pilots please list open seats.
Join us Saturday at 10am to noon for a chilling event at the Chapter hangar. We’ll be serving up Affogato (ice cream drenched in coffee), as well as regular coffee, plain ice cream, and cookies.
We’ll have plenty of time for hangar flying, workshop and members projects viewing and more. Chapter Board members will be on-hand for your suggestions and feedback.

Over coffee and ample donuts, and using online video’s provided by EAA, member Bob Huxster led a group of Chapter members through several VFR and IFR scenarios where pilots found themselves having to overcome challenging situations. These included combinations of worsening weather, changing flying conditions and the health of the PIC…..asking “what would you do in these circumstances?”. (Play the video below):
Lively discussion ensued as the members considered alternative strategies and solutions, as we moved to overall consensus on the optimal actions necessary for the safety of the flight. It was a fun and helpful Saturday-at-the-Chapter-hangar session, as members described and shared their real-time experiences in similar situations.
Our collective thanks to Bob for organizing and leading in these sessions. We’ll have additional sessions popping up to fill the gap when TFR’s are declared, or forecast weather interrupts our flying.
After working through three very different scenarios we moved to the Chapter Meeting room for a demonstration of the recently installed Brandywine Soaring Club (BSC) Glider Simulator. This is a really impressive and immersive experience that several 240 members also got to try. Local N57 terrain is included giving a very realistic feel to the flying. BSC will offer 240 members further demos and sim flights in the near future.
Greetings from the Chapter Board and Officers, who hope you’re enjoying the summer months, and doing lots of aviating or aviation-related stuff!
We wanted to provide an update on Chapter happenings, and give a preview of what we’re planning for the Fall and beyond.
The headline is that the Chapter continues to thrive, undertaking many aviation activities, completing Chapter hangar maintenance and upgrades, all while also expanding the Chapter membership, and welcoming 21 new members this year to date (we also had 21 new members in 2022 and 15 in 2021). Our membership today stands at 177.
Welcome new members, we’re excited to have you with us!
First a look-back! In recent weeks volunteers teams have:
- refreshed and repaired the paint on the external staircase, cleaned out the hangar and storage areas, added new decals to entrance doors
- replaced and updated the Chapter hangar access arrangements and general security (info here)
- held three Fly-Outs, including to Tangier Island!
- held two well-attended IMC/VMC Discussion Groups
- held successful Pancake Breakfast events, and flew groups of Young Eagles
- held four ‘Saturday at the Chapter Hangar’ events, coffee mornings etc
- toured the Hagley Museum Machine Shop
JUST ADDED – We have two new Picnic Tables added to our deck for use when we have deck parties, cook-outs, coffee mornings and for expanded use during our Pancake Breakfasts too, enabling breakfasters to eat outside if desired. We’ve placed these more to the front of the hangar doors, for more regular use and replacing the old individual chairs we had there previously.
GLIDER SIM INSTALL – our Brandywine Soaring friends were given Board approval to install a Glider Flight Sim in the rear of our Chapter meeting room. Early reports indicate the sim is very impressive and will aid new and student glider pilots in their training. EAA240 members will get the opportunity to try-out the new system in the months ahead.
For the upcoming Fall and Winter seasons we’re planning some new activities, on the back of our regular and popular set of happenings:
NEW – Three Chapter workshops, each with hands-on opportunities;
Riveting – techniques and best practices, led by Tom Kenney
Welding – types and methods, led by Jon Martin
Fabric – practices, methodology, build-your-own, led by Chuck Shipman
We’ll have dates, arrangements and sign-ups coming soon for these workshops.
NEW – We’ll also hold a Chapter Fly Mart! We’ve all got drawers full of avionics and plane stuff that we’d wish someone could use. Bring it along to the EAA240 Fly-Mart on a Saturday morning in Fall for resale, swapping or gifting. We’ll cook some food, have coffee etc. Should be a fun morning. More details to follow, as we fix the date and final details.
So, What’s Next?
- Annual Hangar Deck Party, Tuesday, September 5th (after Labor Day), 5pm. Join us for burgers and buns, bring a side-dish and a chair. Families welcomed.
- Our last-of-the-year fund-raising and local community Pancake Breakfast and Young Eagles Flights happens Saturday, September 23rd. We need our regular volunteer crew for the breakfast and pilots/planes and ground crew to make this event happen. Join us please.
- Our Monthly Membership Meetings resume Monday, October 2nd. Join us for a presentation by the ATC Crew of Dover AFB. We’ll also want hear about your summer OSH adventures! Coffee and nibbles at 6:30pm.
Suggestions for additional Chapter events, workshops, activities, destinations for Fly-Outs are all welcomed. Please let us know what else we should be doing, here please or to any Chapter officer.
