Productive Morning – Hangar Projects

 

Much progress was accomplished this morning (Saturday 27th) on the list of Hangar maintenance and upgrades we hoped to complete. Rain meant we couldn’t repaint the hangar door exterior framework but with the help of a mobile hoist (thanks Jim Clark!) we began to clad and insulate the door interior.
Then, using the same impressive hoist, the team converted the radiant heaters to better utilize our new natural gas supply.
At the same time, we repositioned and put up new signage for all Fire Extinguishers and First Aid boxes around the hangar and kitchen areas.
The team fitted the new large-screen TV to the wall and tested it – beautiful!
We also began the planning, layout and installation of the new office area worktops and cabinetry in the kitchen.
The volunteer team also fitted a ‘dead-bolt’ to the rear hangar door, to increase security.
We postponed the planned painting of the two new replacement entrance doors in the kitchen area until the spring, and better weather!
A very productive and fun morning, and our collective thanks to the team who contributed to make such progress. The team included: John Leslie, Jeff Geist, Ken Hess, Larry Keating, Ralph Dooley, Dan Gutierrez, Jim Clark, Lee Blazejewski, John Bickhart, Bob Greeley, Dave McKenzie, Frank McDonald, me.

BIG call-out to Jim Clark for the use of the formidable hoist that enabled us to complete so much this morning. Appreciated!

More to do, particularly to get the new kitchen worktops and cabinetry in-place, but with this level of membership engagement we can be confident of a further volunteer team effort to complete the work in keeping our 20+ year-old facility in good condition for all members use.

Christmas & Holiday Party 2022

Invitation to the Chapter Christmas & Holiday Party 2022
Saturday, December 3rd, 1pm

We made it! You Made it! Here we are at Christmas and the Holiday season 2022. So it’s time for the Annual EAA Chapter 240 Party to celebrate the season.

So, join us Saturday, December 3rd at 1pm (new time!), as we gather to celebrate the end of another challenging period and the start of a whole new year. We’ll be serving up traditional turkey, ham and beef and some desserts along with coffee, tea and soda’s. We ask you to bring a traditional main course side-dish please, to add to our table. It’s BYOB too!

Please plan on joining with your Chapter buddies and families, and with our friends from the Airport staff, the Flight School and Brandywine Soaring.

No presentations, no quest speakers. But we will have raffle prizes donated by your Board Members and by the Airport (free time on the new Flight Sim-wow!).

This should be a fun event and we look forward to seeing you and yours at the Chapter Hangar, Saturday December 3rd, at 1pm. We’ll be looking for you.

Remember to bring a seasonal dish please!

Call for Volunteer Help – Sunday

On Sunday 27th we have the benefit of a ‘Cherry-Picker’ hoist, courtesy of a generous Chapter member and hope to take full advantage of it that morning to complete several areas of important maintenance to the Chapter hangar, including:

  • sand and paint main hangar door frame
  • replace insulation tiles on hangar door and clad with aluminum
  • upgrade hangar ceiling heaters for natural gas
  • hang fire extinguishers and signage in kitchen, hangar and meeting room
  • install donated TV on kitchen wall
  • add dead-bolt to hangar rear door
  • paint new replacement kitchen door, ready for install

This is an ambitious list and we’ll complete what we can on Sunday, dependent on the level of response we get.

If time and skills permit we’ll also form a team to begin to plan the installation of the new kitchen/office area counter tops and cabinets (already purchased and onsite), to be completed over several weekends.

We hope you can come and help on Sunday, and complete this punch-list of work that will keep our facility – now 22 years old – in good shape. We’ll start at 9, complete around 1pm and will have the standard 240 coffee and donuts to sustain the team!

Plane Builders Forum – Nov 19th

Plane Builders Forum – Access to Chapter members plane-building expertise and experience

You’ve considered building or restoring a plane but have so many questions, concerns and/or challenges that you’ve not taken the first step? Do you wish you could have a conversation with someone who has built a plane, or is in the process of building/restoring a plane? Do you wish you knew somebody who would share their experiences – good and bad – in plane building?

We assembled several of the experienced Chapter member plane builders/restorers for you. Come meet with them and get your questions answered. No presentations, no teaching – just conversations with members who’ve done it (some several times!), or are in the process of doing it, and could give you the encouragement you need to get going on your own project.

Available to you on Saturday, November 19th from 9am to 12:30pm will be EAA240 Chapter members:

AGM 2022 – Report to Membership

Report to Membership – November 2022

The Chapter membership gathered to hear from the attending Board Members on the overall Chapter status, the results of 2022 Chapter activities and to learn of the approach and plans for the coming year.

The Chapter By-laws required voting for three Executive Board positions. Member Bert Shipman had taken on the task of Nominations Chair to oversee the voting process. Bert reported the following at the meeting:

“Having received three nominations, one for Chapter President, one for Chapter Secretary and one for Chapter Membership Director and, having received no additional nominations up to the cut-off date of October 28th at 5pm, all three candidates are unopposed, and no voting is required tonight. Congratulations are in order to Mike Parry, President, to Bud Swenson, Secretary and to Paul Dolan, Chapter Membership Director”.

A copy of the Executive Board Members and Officers presentations on the challenges and accomplishments of ‘Restarting the Chapter’ can be found at the Chapter web site ‘Members Only’ area, covering the financials (now healthy), successful fund-raising, Young Eagles – 142 flown, member events (many, including fly-outs, tower visits, DANG visit and more), membership count – now 172, with 17 new members in 2022, Scholarship program resort, donations and plans for hangar upkeep. The Chapter is clearly well positioned for continued success in 2023.

Members viewed a video shown as part of the AGM capturing much of the activities of 2022, which can be viewed in the Chapter video’s area .

The guest speaker of the evening was Jon Martin, Aviation Director of the airport, with a review of the history and the sizable improvements and additions to airport facilities, capabilities and services. Hugely impressive, and very meaningful for all airport users, for Chapter members and for aviation in our region.

We also took time to celebrate member Tom Callahan’s very recent ‘FAA Wright Brothers – Master Pilot Award’ reflecting Tom’s 50 year contribution to aviation, and aviation safety.

Master Aviator Award – Tom Callahan

FAA’s Master Pilot Award – Tom Callahan – Lifelong contribution to aviation
The Brandywine Soaring Association held their AGM at the Chapter Meeting Room this morning, and surprised EAA240 member Tom Callahan who, at the meeting, was awarded and presented with the FAA’s Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award for fifty years of dedicated service in aviation safety.

 FAAST Program Manager Eric Sieracki led the ceremony, with Tom’s wife and family at his side, detailing Tom’s involvement and contribution to  commercial airlines, war experiences, flight instruction, soaring instruction, flight-services owner/operator(with his wife), FAAST team member and much more. Tom’s BSA and attending EAA240 members cheered him on as he received the award, offering many congratulations.

Tom is the EAA240 Flight Advisor and a long-time Chapter member. Congratulations Tom, and thanks for all you do for aviation.
