May Membership Meeting – Monday

EAA Chapter 240 announces Members Monthly Meeting & Cook-Out
Monday May 2nd, 2022 5:30pm

For our May Membership Meeting we’re having a Cook-Out prior to the formal meeting, starting at 5:30pm, and hope you can join us. Guests & visitors most welcome. Please bring a side-dish or dessert (be creative!). We’ll supply drinks. Donations accepted in lieu of a food contribution.

Thorne Harkin – Delaware National Guard C-130H Pilot

Thorne started flying at 12 years old.  He went to school at Marywood University for Aviation Management.  After college, Thorne ran Reading Air school of flight and FBO.  While at Reading, he became the youngest airshow promoter and learned the airshow business.  Thorne was fortunate to get selected as a pilot in the Delaware Air National Guard and currently serves as a C-130H pilot, recently returning from a deployment overseas. Thorne is a member of EAA Chapter 240, and a CFI-2 at Flight Connection, the flight school at N57.

Presentation: Upset Recovery Training

The presentation will help alleviate those fears you may have of those dreaded spins or clear up some misconceptions about slips, skids, and spins. We will be covering many different topics, but will specifically identify how and when we could get into a spin, discuss preventative measures to keep us away from that point, and how to recover from a spin. This one will be a very fun and interactive evening.

Visitors & guests always welcomed at Chapter Membership Meetings. We’ll be complete around 9pm, at which time hangar flying will resume.

We’re Back! And How!!

After a hiatus of two years it was time – at last – to restart our Chapter fund-raising Pancake Breakfast. But planning and predicting the breakfast sales volumes was tricky, and we had several new team members and also had to procure all new food supplies from scratch. It was challenging and, having to cancel our planned Young Eagle flights due to a TFR, we prepared for a modest start to the season but which we hoped we could build on through 2022. We would use this first event to hone our processes, building on the great work done by the EAA240 PB team members that came before us.

It was clear by 9am however that we were in fact in for a very busy morning! A steady stream of hungry breakfasters streamed into the Chapter hangar space. We began to recognize faces and names from past events, it was a great sense of community – and fun! Most tables were full by 10am, and we were already running low on some food items. In fact, we had to do TWO food runs to local stores during the morning!

Feedback on the breakfast service was very positive, with many commenting that it was “…great to be back”, and “…we missed you all, thanks for doing this”. Interest from potential new Chapter members also featured in the morning.

All credit to the EAA240 PB volunteers who helped in purchasing, preparing, moving airplanes, cooking, serving, cleaning and returning the hangar to working space, to make this event the success that it clearly was. A great team event, which was great to be part of, and fun too.

We’ll report more at the May Membership Meeting (Monday, May 2nd) on the financials and on plans for the next Breakfast and Young Eagles event of Saturday, May 21st. We’ll be looking for volunteers again!

Young Eagles Flights Postponed

Pancake Breakfast is Go!

Young Eagles Flights of Saturday April 23rd postponed.
Changes to our weekend program

With the President at home in Wilmington Delaware this weekend, the Secret Service have imposed flight restrictions across the area. This means that our Pancake Breakfast is on, beginning 8am Saturday (and serving ’til noon-ish), but that our planned Young Eagles flights have to be postponed.

Disappointing for sure. We’ll look for another date, and our next scheduled Young Eagles flights is Saturday, May 21st. We’ll keep the web site updated (here) and issue eMail notices to reconfirm dates/times. We hope to see kids at a future EAA240 flying event, we’re ready to share the experience of flying!

Meanwhile, join us for the best Airport Pancake Breakfast in the region on Saturday morning (23rd), starting at 8am, serving until noon-ish. Come for breakfast, see the aircraft under construction, visit the unique airport that is New Garden Flying Field N57.

Pancake Breakfast – Almost Ready!

Lot’s Happening in prep for the Pancake Breakfast & YE’s

We’ve replaced all aged consumables and purchased many replacements plus we have invested in some new equipment, that will serve us for the five Breakfast Fund-Raising events we plan this year, and beyond. Final purchasing of food items will happen later this week. We plan to set out the hangar Friday afternoon – come help if you can!

The Young Eagles team is also getting ready, hopefully for a TFR-free weekend and some welcoming weather!

We’re almost ready, and the excitement is growing as we restart these fun community Chapter activities, hoping to see many of our old friends, some new ones and – of course – YOU, with your family and friends. This is our first event for some time, but we hope for a strong turnout and a fun morning.
