During June and July the EAA240 Scholarship Selection & Oversight Committee received applications for the three $4,000 Flight Training Scholarships made possible this year through the generosity of the Stott Foundation. Under the leadership of the Chapter Vice President, Octavian Codreanu, the committee members Dan Gutierrez, Barry Stott, Bob Huxster and Jeff Vaughn reviewed all applications, met with a selected sub set of youngsters and made the determination that the following would be recipients of the 2021 Fred Kacena Scholarship Awards: Connor Flynn : Connor is 18 years old and is a freshman at Pennsylvania College of Technology in Williamsport, Pa. He will be studying towards a 4 year degree in Aircraft Maintenance Technology. Connor has been around N57 since his first year of the Future Aviators summer camp when he was 10 years old. He then Graduated from being a camper, to a counselor, and then to line crew at the airport. He recently completed the ground school with New Garden Flight Connection and he is very exited to continue flying! Chloe DiFilippo : Chloe is an ambitious 17-year-old who was born and raised in Chester County, Pennsylvania. She will be attending Saint Mark’s High School in the fall as a 12th grade student. Chloe participates in many activities at Saint Mark’s High School including the Color Guard (as the captain of the team), the Key Club, and the Morning News Team. Chloe has always had a passion for traveling and trying new activities, which contributed to her desire to become a pilot from a very young age. It wasn’t until earlier this year, however, that she was given the opportunity to pursue her interest in flying planes. After an introductory lesson at the New Garden Flight Connection, Chloe immediately fell in love with the thrill of flying and decided to work to achieve her private pilot license. She plans to go to college to become a pilot and aviation technician and eventually serve our country in the Navy. Nathan Merrill: I was raised in Smyrna, Delaware. I took a vacation and went up in a glider, sparking a dream to fly. I went home and found EAA 240 and went to a few Young Eagles flights. I moved to the area in July of 2020 and started attending Avon Grove high school. I will be a senior this year and hope to complete my license before I leave for college to become a professional pilot. Their flight training, at the New Garden Flight Connection Flight School using the Scholarship funding, begins immediately. Members will have an opportunity to meet the award winners at our upcoming Chapter Deck Party, Tuesday September 7th. Our thanks to all who applied for the Scholarships this year, our commiserations to those who were unsuccessful and our congratulations to Nathan, Chloe and Connor, whose progress we will monitor with interest. Congratulations and thanks also to our committee members – Octavian, Jeff, Barry, Bob and Dan – job well done. Information about our Scholarship is here.
